Schools across the UK are being invited to join the Schools’ Air quality Monitoring for Health and Education (SAMHE) citizen science project. This project gives teachers and pupils the chance to view their schools air quality data through an interactive Web App, which is possible through the provision of free indoor air quality monitors to the participating schools. The Web App provides feedback on how the air quality fluctuates over the course of hours, days, weeks and months. The DfE supported research project brings together scientists, teachers and pupils in order to gain a better understanding of indoor air quality in UK schools, meaning that evidence can be provided to inform national policies and practice. SAMHE has been produced WITH and FOR schools as a result of research findings highlighting the impact that poor air quality can have on attainment and attendance. The project aims to generate an unparalleled dataset, with the data in each monitor being recorded in a national database. Teachers involved in SAMHE highlight that its ‘powerful to see the live feed’ and that the ‘range of options allows us to use this system across the STEM subjects’. More information on the SAMHE project can be found through the @SAMHEProject Twitter account, or, their website: samhe.org.uk.
