Laura is a Senior Genetic Technologist in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals/University of Leeds Genomics Facility. Her expertise is in the application of novel technologies to improve the care pathway for patients undergoing genomic testing for rare disease and cancer. Laura’s PhD work focussed on a new nanopore sequencing platform which offers a number of diagnostic advantages over the current standard of care techniques used for these patients.
During her CHORAL post-doctoral fellowship Laura aims to expand her knowledge of this technology by generating pilot data from Ewing sarcoma, a rare childhood cancer of bone and soft tissue. Laura’s ambition is to utilise this new technology to characterise the methylation differences between Ewing sarcoma tumours and preclinical in vitro models of the tumours, generating data which will inform the choice of candidate drugs for clinical trials. The CHORAL fellowship will allow her to undertake further bioinformatics training to better analyse these pilot data sets, as well as develop her research leadership skills, to allow her to prepare a funding proposal for a larger scale Ewing sarcoma study.
